AFA ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHAPTER DONATES MATERIALS AND INSTALLATION FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECT

(November 5, 2008)

The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Fence Association recently completed a charitable project for Salt Lake Valley Habitat for Humanity.  The project was selected by the chapter because of its particularly unique nature.  Throughout the Salt Lake Valley, an increasing number of properties have become contaminated through illegal drug production and trafficking. This project site had been used for meth processing leaving it unsafe and without viable options for renting or selling. The landlord, Brent Hughes, decided to donate the land to Salt Lake Habitat for Humanity allowing the charitable organization to facilitate a property renovation for two single mothers and their children.

As it has grown, the Rocky Mountain chapter looks for ways to incorporate community service into its membership activities. In early 2008, the chapter leadership decided a meaningful membership project would be the donation of materials and labor to construct a fence for families in need. Organized by Rick Ashcraft of CFC Fences & Decks and chapter president through the course of the project, members convened on the site to remove an existing chain link fence that had fallen into disrepair and install a new privacy fence. With regards to the project, Ashcraft states:  “We were thrilled to find a project which allowed us to transform a location that was damaging our community to a safe haven for two families in need, giving these mothers and their children a fresh start and hopefully increasing the chances that they will have their own positive impact on our community over time.” Because the families have small children, the yard was fully enclosed with privacy gates. Prairie Fence™, a “green” composite product,  was selected to help the families avoid long-term care of their fence. Materials were donated by chapter member Heartland BioComposites.

Salt Lake Habitat for Humanity was exceptionally grateful for the fence installation. Acquiring donations of materials and labor from professional fence builders eliminated the burden for the non-profit organization of overseeing volunteers that have limited or no expertise in fence construction. It also significantly reduced the time for the project to be completed. As noted by Marvin Jones, the non-profit’s manager: “We are always looking for donations of labor and materials; to have people with professional experience is especially important.”

Members participating in the project included staff from CFC Fences & Decks (Provo, UT), Heartland Biocomposites (Torrington, WY), IQ Gate Systems (Midvale, UT), and Buchanan Access Systems (Sandy, UT).
